What do you do photographers do with their time between capturing sunrise and sunset images? They scout future locations. After sunrise one day, I rode the shuttle bus around the western side of the canyon scouting the scenic overlooks. At the time of my visit, shuttles buses ran early enough to reach these overlooks for sunrise.

I believe Hopi Point is one of the few overlooks where you can actually see the Colorado River. I took this image around 1030 in the morning, well after sunrise. There was nice cloud cover and a rainstorm in the distance. This made for some interesting images compared to the other days where there was bright sunshine and no clouds in the sky.

Here is another sunset image from Yavapi Point at Grand Canyon National Park. This image is looking towards the east; a previous post presents a sunset image looking towards the west. All of the scenic lookouts within Grand Canyon Nation al Park offer incredible compositions in multiple directions.

Given the distances between scenic overlooks, photographers are pretty much limited to a single overlook for each sunrise and sunset. During a short trip to the Grand Canyon when you might one have sunrise and one sunset, you will always wonder if you should have visited a different overlook, or how many images you left uncollected had you planned a longer visit. Even though I had three sunrises and three sunsets, I still have the feeling that there were additional images to be had.

This is sunset on the Rim Trail at Grand Canyon National Park. To me, the interesting part is the tree. Notice how there is detail at the base of the tree, and it slowly transitions to a pure silhouette by the top of the tree. I found this to be an interesting effect.

This image also has a strong foreground with the rocks, a solid back ground with the various color shades along the far canyon wall, and a good sky!

Notice there are no fences. Just past the rocks in the foreground is the canyon itself!
