Here is a Halloween image from Magic Kingdom’s Main Street USA at Walt Disney World.  This is actually a composite of two different images.  The first had the castle, the Mickey Mouse pumpkin wreath, and the small set of ballons on the bottom.  The left side of the first image was pretty much dark sky.

The second image was an isoloation shot of the big set of balloons on the left with some lights just below the balloons.  I selected and copied the balloons from the second image and pasted them to the first image to fill in the black space.

You probably have lots of images that are close, but just seem to be missing the mark.  For those images, look at similar images for additional compositional elements you might be able to paste into the original image.  This is also a good reason to take lots of stock images.  You never know when you will need a small element of the stock image to complete another image.

Madam Leona at Walt Disney World's Haunted Mansion

Madam Leona at Walt Disney World’s Haunted Mansion (click to enlarge)

We recently returned from a trip to Walt Disney World, the first with my Nikon D810.  During that trip I wanted to test the camera’s high ISO capability.

Here is an image of Madam Leona’s floating head at Walt Disney World’s Haunted Mansion.  Madame Leona is located in a very dark area of the Haunted Mansion.  Capturing this image is a good test of your camera’s low light capabilities.

I took this image using my 70-200mm Nikkor set to 120mm.  Because the little Doom Buggies you ride in are moving, I needed a fast shutter speed to avoid blurring the image.  I was not worried about depth of field, so I opened up the aperture all the way.  Because I wanted to control shutter speed and aperture, I put the camera in auto-ISO mode.  I ended up with the following settings:

  • ISO – 12,800
  • Shutter Speed – 1/100 sec
  • Aperture – f/4.0

If you enlarge the image, there is quite a bit of grain and noise.  On other hand, I never had success capturing Madam Leona using my Nikon D300.  Better a grainy image than no image.

Cinderella Castle GIF (click on image to activate GIF animation)

During a recent trip to Walt Disney World, we watched one of the evening shows at the Magic Kingdom.  This show consisted of music and the ever-changing Cinderella’s Castle.  I had my camera on a tripod and tried to capture an image every time a new design appeared.  Because of the near constant changing of the design, many of the images captured the transition between designs and ended up as a blur of colors.

I did manage to capture about a dozen clear images of various designs.  In Photohop, you can stack these images together and create a gif file.  Click on the image above to activate the gif.  Use your browsers Back button to return to this page.

It might take a few seconds for the animation to begin, and it might also be jerky in the beginning.  The animation should smooth out the longer it plays.  I don’t know why it does this, this is the first attempt at making an animated gif file.
