I like the look of backlit sunflowers. At the McKee-Beshers Wildlife Management Area sunflower plantings you might be the only one shooting with the sun in front of you instead of behind you. This is one way to avoid the crowds!

Drooping Sunflowers in the Wild

Drooping Sunflowers

Here are drooping sunflowers at the McKee-Beshers Wildlife Management Area annual sunflower planting. I was traveling at the time of the peak bloom, so I missed the fields full of rows upon rows of sunflowers. I also missed the peak crowd of photographers shooting over each other.

Check the McKee Beshers website in the spring, it will tell you when the sunflowers were planted. Once planted, check the website frequently for updates. Pro tips: 1) bring a wagon to tote your gear, 2) bring a small ladder or step stool so that you can shoot the tops of the sunflowers, they do get tall!

Looming Escape from the Asylum

This looks to be some sort of a laundry chute. I wonder how many residents of the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum saw this as their way out? This was one of my final images from the asylum. By this point I was good and ready to leave this place.
