While there are many, many reasons to make the Hana Highway a multi-day trip, visiting the Palapala Ho‘omau Congregational Church is one major reason. To drive directly to the church and back would take most of the day, without any stops along the way. While the church is worth a visit in and of itself, this gravesite is the major reason to make the trip. Of all of the places on earth, he chose this one as his final resting place.
You know the Willie Nelson song, My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys? Growing up, my heroes have always been aviators (and astronauts). When my wife and I started planning our Hawaii vacation, this was the number one spot I had to visit.
