Driving from the Salinas Pueblo Mission National Monument Visitor Center in Mountainair to the Gran Quivira site, I passed a ranch with a Aeromotor Company windmill.  I had seen the windmills all over New Mexico, but there was never a cloud in the sky.  I had almost given up on getting a good image of one.  When I passed this one there were clouds in the background.  There was nothing of interest on the ground around the windmill, so I walked along the road until I could include the clouds in the image.

Now I have to find a windmill in an interesting setting with clouds in the sky.

Here is the Tomahawk Service Station located in Mountainair, NM.  The building is located two blocks from the Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monuments visitor center.  When I first saw this building, it reminded me of the Pixar Disney movie Cars.  In my mind I could imagine Mater, Luigi, and Ramone hanging out in front waiting for Lighting McQueen to come in for a tire change.

The actual building is more of an adobe color.  To make my image different from everyone else’s, I converted the building to black and white and left the sky its natural blue.  I don’t know if I really like the image it this way, but it is different.

Column Speleothem, Carlsbad Caverns

One last image from the Big Room at Carlsbad Caverns.  This is a column speleothem (or cave formation to us non-scientists) from Carlsbad Caverns.  Unlike stalactites and stalagmites, a column speleothem reaches from the cavern’s floor to ceiling.

This column has many interesting features such as scrolls in the upper left, and what look like roots, or inverted jellyfish along the left.
